In 1987, the Philippines became the leading supplier of sea-based workers worldwide, with hardworking attitudes and a loyalty record. Their professionalism, determination, and work ethic made them the most sought-after seafarers globally, providing the shipping industry with unparalleled service. It is no surprise that, since then, the Philippines has remained the world’s manning capital. Out of the 1.5 million mariners worldwide, a staggering 25% of them are Filipino sea-based workers. Their significant contribution to the shipping industry proves why Filipinos are the largest nationality bloc in this critical market, reinforcing their growing economic power and commitment to global trade.

Filipino seafarers have contributed significantly to the shipping and seaborne trade industry for decades. According to Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, they are “unsung heroes” in an industry responsible for moving most of the world’s trade.
